Chime doorbells are the newer models. This unit is responsible for the well-known ding-dong tone. Chime units makes use of a solenoid. Solenoid is a type of electromagnet like the older models. However, this one features a movable iron bar at the core enclosed by a similar cylindrically-coiled wire. When the solenoid gets animated by a flow of current, the iron core is swayed to move along the length of the coiled wire. This can be taken to be similar to a piston. When the doorbell button is pressed, the action causes solenoid to strike a chime to make the distinctive doorbell sound announcing that somebody is at the front door.
