You can get those older futon covers looking like new again real simply with a quick wash and line dry.  Or, if you have a kind that cannot be machine washed, you can opt for a new futon cover and forget all about that old one.  The price of  futon slipcovers is a fraction of what you might pay for new furniture, so why not.

If you get bored of your traditional sofa, it would cost much more to get new cushion covers or to replace the whole thing.  This is the best way to get a new look without the big expenditure.  You can also choose to spend more on covering your futon if you like.  There are always leather and microsuede fabrics that can be used to make your futon look like a brand new couch.
