The new, leaner world economy is having a tremendous impact on fashion and beauty. Sure, models still stride down the runways of New York and Paris wearing outfits that retail for thousands of dollars, and top-end fashion magazines refuse to show a photograph of anything that costs less than a week’s salary for the average working woman. But slowly and quietly, a change is taking place. More and more fashion retailers and publishers are learning what smart women have always known: it’s possible to dress fashionably without spending a fortune on clothes. What’s new about this is the media perception that looking great while saving money is chic, not cheap. This has been a boon for women’s shopping opportunities, with more of the consumer-level chain stores adding couture-inspired clothing to their racks–at discount store prices.
