Metal buildings are used to perform a variety of functions. Steel is usually the main material used for the construction of these buildings and will form the interior support structure and in many cases also the metal siding. Metal roofing is usually used as well. Any metal building can have a lot of different uses especially in creating much needed storage space for agricultural or commercial properties but also in private homes as well. Offices and some private living spaces can also be constructed from steel. Metal buildings have been in used for about a century and their popularity increasing considerably towards the end of the 1940’s. This was because the end of the Second World War meant that the supply of steel increased rapidly and so it could used much more in the commercial markets.
The construction of metal buildings takes a variety of forms. Some of the most frequently used designs are the ‘straight-walled’ and also the ‘arched’ designs. These terms describe the exterior structure. The arched design is most often used for large agricultural buildings while the straight walled structures which provide a larger total amount of storage space and are usually seen in industrial buildings, factories and other large commercial projects.
The interior structure will usually be either ‘multiple span’ or ‘clear span’. The difference between these two is that a clear span design has no supports strengthening the structure which take up space in the inside of the building. This is possible because these buildings use very large beams to support the weight of the structure. These are usually high up in the internals of the property and so don’t cause obstructions on the ground. This design is often utilized where the inside of a property needs to consist of just a large open space for storage. Buildings which use the multiple span designs have columns or some other form of supports taking up some of the interior space at ground level. These kinds of structures are usually more economical than the clear span options but the supports can be inconvenient obstructions if large vehicles or other objects need to be kept in a building. The type of interior structure which is chosen for a building will depend on the primary use of the property. The roofs of these structures will usually be constructed using steel corrugated roofing material whether the metal roofs are designed to be are arched, pitched or flat.
